Political Philosophy:

  • I believe to my core that Americans are overtaxed and that an overreaching government bureaucracy has put in place barriers to success as citizens pursue the American Dream.
  • I believe that America is strongly held together by the families and that we as conservatives should do everything we can to protect the family unit.
  • I believe in the right to life, the right to bear arms for self-defense, and the right to pursue happiness as the founding fathers intended.
  • I believe that America is the greatest nation on earth, that Arkansas is the greatest state in that nation, and that God has blessed me beyond measure to live in both.
  • Finally, I believe that our service men and women deserve more than we can ever repay and that society should never stop searching for ways to serve them as they have served us.

Family: Daughter of Floyd and Crystal Harvey, sister of Stratton (Sarah) and Destini (Chris). Aunt to Wyatt, Chandler, Calli, Skyler, Harvey, and two beautiful babies soon to make their arrival!

Interests: Politics, Volunteering, Spending Time with Family, and Saturday Night Football (Go Bears!).

On attending the Youth Leadership School:
The Leadership Institute Youth Leadership School was an amazingly eye-opening experience that I believe every young conservative should attend. I made lifelong connections that will help amplify conservative voices and I look forward to taking everything I have learned with me as I continue my career. I have learned a lot of great tools that will make me a better State Chairman because I am able to provide this knowledge and insight to the Arkansas College Republican Chapter Chairmen. The information and knowledge from the Young Leadership School is an accumulation of Morton Blackwell’s brilliance and experience that has brought together conservative minds for decades. I am truly thankful to the Patrick Calhoun Leadership Scholarship for selecting me to attend such an awesome school.

My Future:
I do not know what the future holds for me, but I know it will be God’s will and grace that will get me there. I hope to finish getting my Master’s Degree of Public Administration. I am a first-generation college graduate and I intend to make my family proud by earning my degree and making Arkansas a better place for my nieces, nephews, and my own children in the future. I hope to always be active by volunteering for the Republican Party of Arkansas and working to get conservatives elected to continue our super majority in the state legislature. I have a passion for getting young people involved and I hope to continue with that passion as long as I can. If I am fortunate enough to be called to public service, I may run for office eventually. Ultimately, I have a servant’s heart and I am at God’s beautiful mercy as to how my life will unfold.

Devin Alven

Born: In Conway and currently reside in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

Current Service: Executive Director of the Arkansas Federation of College Republicans, Member of the University of Arkansas College Republicans.

Political Philosophy:

  • Conservatism is the ideal policy for an efficient government, which ensures a prosperous state while defending our freedom and rights.
  • I believe that government should be ran as our founding fathers intended, which is by the people and for the people. The best government is a small government with reasonable regulation, free markets to help us grow and prosper.
  • I believe that the United States Constitution should be interpreted as written by our founders and that the courts respect the “originalist” intent as binding and that the document should not be malleable, evolving and ever-changing.

Family: Son of Dean Alven and Loria Satterfield-Alven, Grandson of Harold Satterfield and Mary Collins.

Interests: Exploring Arkansas’ natural beauty while spending time with friends and family. I also have a strong interest in politics and public policy.

On attending the Youth Leadership School: The Patrick Calhoun Leadership Scholarship allowed my roots to grow deeper in conservatism while learning how to lead my peers and grow the conservative cause. The time in Washington D.C. was a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn from Morton Blackwell and attend the same institution as so many great Americans. Washington is the beating heart of the free world. Learning how to promote conservatism was a surreal and humbling experience that will stay with me for a lifetime. The Youth Leadership School is a critical opportunity for anyone who is interested in government, holding office, or the concept of conservatism.

My Future: I am a first-year student at the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville and upon graduation I plan to serve Arkansas as an attorney working in state or local government.

  • I believe that free markets, limited government, and individual initiative and achievement in business will help our economy flourish.

Family: Son of Denise and George Mosley, twin brother of Weston Mosley, and brother of Allison Mosley.

Interests: Politics, Music, Faith, and Movies

On attending the Youth Leadership School: I wouldn’t have acquired the abilities to contribute to the conservative cause without obtaining the Patrick Calhoun Leadership Scholarship. I left the school with priceless knowledge that I’ll put to good use when I take over as Chairman of College Republicans at UALR. Additionally, the knowledge I gained has been helpful in my day-to-day actions as an American Citizen. It was both exhilarating and moving to attend the National Youth Leadership School over the Fourth of July holiday weekend. I became more aware of how crucial it is to live in a nation that cherishes individual liberty and freedom after visiting all of our country’s monuments.

My Future: I am a junior about to enter my senior year at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and I am currently working on two majors: political science and applied communications. During my last semester of college, I intend to intern for the next Governor of Arkansas, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, or Congressman Bruce Westermann. I plan to pursue either a Master’s Degree in Public Administration or a Master of Studies in Law. I hope to be working on a congressional campaign or staff by becoming a communications director or be placed somewhere within a government office that will benefit from my skills.

  • I believe the family unit of a mother and a father with no exception is the building block of society. Nations fail when the family structure is weakened.
  • I believe that farmers and small businesses are the backbone of not only the American economy, but also the world’s economy.
  • I believe that government should place as few restrictions as possible on hard-working Americans because when these people are limited the rest of America is held back.

Family: Son of Patty & Mike Martin and sister Taylee Martin

Interests: Faith, Family and Friends, Politics, Law, and History.

Future: I plan to graduate from the University of Arkansas with a degree in Political science. I then plan to attend law school, and upon completion, serve in our armed forces.  I hope to hold office in Arkansas in order to improve both my state and my nation through leadership and to reinstate the values of both Ronald Reagan and George Bush, Sr.

Youth Leadership School: The Youth Leadership School was an extremely motivating and educational experience. I am so excited to get back to Arkansas and use what I have learned to expand conservative values and the Republican Party of Arkansas. Thank you so much for the opportunity and experience.

Jessica Rae Kloss

Born: Little Rock, Arkansas
Education: Beebe High School, Sophomore Political Science and Journalism Major with a minor in music at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville

Current Service: U of A College Republicans Secretary, Summer Intern for Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin, Associated Student Government Senator

Past Service: Associated Press Election Stringer for Benton County, Arkansas Senate Page, Arkansas Girl’s State Senator

Political Philosophy:

  • I believe the United States was founded on the principles of liberty and self-determination.
  • I believe America is the greatest nation ever created and it is a nation where everyone has the capacity to prosper.
  • I believe the smallest government is the best government. The people are freer when government is smaller. Big government means more spending, more spending means a bigger deficit, and the cycle goes on and on. It is time we break that cycle and end ridiculous government spending. Fiscal responsibility is extremely important and we cannot continue to spend more money than we have in our pocketbook.
  • I believe that small businesses are the backbone of our economy and that we need lower taxes and to create incentives to keep businesses here in the USA. A good tax is a low tax that doesn’t discourage investment and production.
  • I believe the framers of the Constitution drafted an incredible document and it is imperative that we interpret it as it is written to guarantee the preservation of liberty for generations to come. We have a moral obligation to do so.

Family: Daughter of David and Cindy Kloss

Interests:  Politics, playing tenor saxophone in the Razorback Marching Band, piano, reading, history, and being Methodist.

Future: After graduating from the U of A with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Journalism, I plan to attend law school to pursue a J.D. Degree and practice law in the state of Arkansas. I plan to run for the Arkansas General Assembly one day, and hopefully for United States Congress so I can serve the people and work for the interests of Arkansans.

Youth Leadership School: The Youth Leadership School was incredible! They described it as “trying to drink from a fire hydrant” and that was so true. I can’t wait to apply the information that I learned about the media, press, and PR to my internship at the Lieutenant Governor’s Office! It was just great! We also made so many friends from around the nation!

Sydney Combs

Born: Bentonville, Arkansas
Education: Life Way Christian School, University of Arkansas

Current Service: Vice Chair University of Arkansas College Republicans

Past Service: Campaigned for Leslie Rutledge, Arkansas Attorney General

Political Philosophy:

  • I believe in the 10th Amendment and that states rights should always exceed the rights of the Federal Government.
  • I believe that people should keep more of their hard-earned money because excessive taxation is not good for the economy or the family and discourages productivity.
  • I believe all Americans have the right to life and the right to keep and bear arms.
  • I believe America is the most blessed nation on earth (along with Israel). We must recognize this advantage and encourage a moral society if we are to continue to receive the Lord’s blessings.

Interest: Family and friends, anything Razorback, fashion, cooking and being outdoors.

Family: Daughter of LaDonna & Chris Combs; siblings are Madison, Regan, and Jack Walker.

Future: I intend to enroll in the U of A’s dual-degree program that will allow me to receive both a Juris Doctorate and Masters in Political Science at the same time. I am currently considering two career options, which are obtaining a PhD in Political Science to become a college professor, or pursuing a political career in Arkansas or Washington. I may also consider working for a conservative interest group in Washington D.C. or as a US House or Senate staffer after completing school.

Youth Leadership School: It was an incredible experience! I learned so much about campaigning, activism, and how important it is to know what you are doing when involved in the world of politics. I also met many people and made great connections! This trip was such a blessing and has revealed more to me about the nature of politics and myself that I knew possible!

  • I believe that Americans want honesty and integrity restored to federal, state, and local government. I also believe that citizens want common-sense solutions and a government that works on their behalf.
  • As President Reagan said, “Government is not the solution to our problem, government is the problem.” Therefore, I believe in the 10th Amendment and reducing Federal encroachment of what ought to be left to the states as defined in the U.S. Constitution.
  • I believe that we should conserve and protect our environment and its natural beauty, but we should also weigh the costs of regulation that harm industry and individual livelihoods.
  • I believe that life is precious and should be protected as defined by the 13th Amendment.

2014 Recipients

Sarah Hamilton

Sarah Hamilton

Born: Paragould, Arkansas
Education: Paragould High School, Arkansas State University
Current Service: Social Media Director for James Sturch Campaign, Arkansas House District 63; Vice-Chairman ASU College Republicans; Miss Arkansas State University 2013; ASU Student Government Vice President 2013-2014

Political Philosophy:

  • I believe my generation has a responsibility to “ignite the flame,” and create an even larger number of conservatives. The future of the state and nation is in our hands. Let’s impart our strong morals and beliefs to others our age to build a better America.
  • I believe in limited government that works for the people of the United States. I am an advocate for pro-life. I believe in our second amendment rights. I believe that those in need should not have to depend on the government for provisions, but instead should be helped to become self-reliant.
  • I believe that hard work is necessary in order to gain success. It is also a fact that success is inconvenient, hence making it HARD work. I believe you should never feel entitled to anything because of who you are or who you know. Blood, sweat, and tears built this great country; let’s continue that concept.
  • I believe we should educate the younger generation to help them discover what they believe. As well as why they believe what they believe.
  • I believe in having pride to be an American and thankful for the privilege of living in the United States. We are blessed to live in a country that supports freedom, equality of opportunity, and the hope of prosperity. We should celebrate the values and morals that build the country and strive to make our land better for generations to come.

Family: Daughter of Venus and Tim Hamilton
Interests: Singing/playing music, advocating for the arts, supporting the ASU Red Wolves, politics, the Miss America Organization, being outdoors, and spending time with my family.

My Future: Everything is wide open right now! Although I have a Bachelors of Science with an emphasis in Communications Disorders, I’m not sure I want to pursue a career in Speech Pathology. I am interested in everything for music, to higher education, to politics, to public relations. I am not one hundred percent sure what move I will make next, but I trust The Lord to guide me in a direction pleasing to him.

Courtney Jane Baltz

Courtney Jane Baltz

Born: Pocahontas, Arkansas Education: Pocahontas High School, Finance Major at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro Current Service: Arkansas Federation of College Republicans District 1 Representative, Vice Chair AFCR Arkansas State University Past Service: Intern in Congressman Rick Crawford’s Office, Arkansas Senate Page, Arkansas Girl’s State Delegate, ASU Student Government Freshman Senator
Political Philosophy:

  • I believe that hard work and commitment to excellence is how people should apply themselves in today’s economy. Individual efforts and productivity at the local and state level is how the USA developed into an economic superpower and it is how we will remain an economic power.
  • Adam smith wrote in his ‘Wealth of Nations’ that the main role of the states is to defend its’ borders. I believe that a strong military and intelligence organization are necessary for America to secure safety or continue to prosper.
  • The right to “keep and bear arms” is essential to guarantee our freedom and protect our homes. Indeed, the Founders knew from experience that a ‘fourth check’ was needed to insure that the three branches of government shared power to prevent tyranny. As a conservative, I feel strongly that the nation should not overreact and curb the rights in the Second Amendment. It was too costly to earn this right and would be even more costly to regain it once lost.
  • America was founded upon the belief that anyone can worship as they choose. Our Founders recognized that a state-sponsored religion would lead to religious discrimination. They knew that the principles found in the Bible would allow a government and its’ citizens to work together harmoniously, even if the citizens have differing belief systems. In addition, America was built on the stability of the home, which begins with marriage between one man and one woman.

Family: Daughter of Nancy and Paul Baltz, two bothers Todd & Matthew, and sister Jared Interests: Politics, Investments, Reading, Running, Cooking, and Chi Omega Fraternity

McKenzie Macy

McKenzie Macy

Volunteer at the Family Violence Prevention Center in Batesville, Arkansas.

Political Philosophy:

  • I am a conservative that believes in equality of opportunity. America is a nation that values hard-work, less government, and lower taxes. A free market rewards those who are willing to work.
  • Businesses are the key to a thriving economy and jobs will help people become less dependent on the government.
  • Government action should consider how domestic and foreign policies affect the nation in the long-term and not the short-term. When the government becomes too involved in education, healthcare, etc., civil society becomes less efficient.
  • Government should not spend more than it takes in – except in wartime. Keynesian economic policies do not work.
  • Political action should always come from the grassroots and not from the top down. The state and local leaders generally know what is best and have better solutions than Washington DC.
  • Politics should be about issues and not candidates. Political candidates should consider themselves public servants and citizens should hold them accountable.
  • Every child has a right to life at conception.
  • I believe in American exceptionalism, and that the U.S. is still the greatest nation because of the timeless values in the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights. The American Dream still exists, but only as long as the American people are willing to fight for it.

Family: Son of Christy and Phillip Macy; two brothers and a sister – Garrett, Jacob, and Elisabeth.
Interests: Politics, Law, History, Traveling, Learning, Reading, Music, Movies, Languages, Basketball, Football, and spending time with family and friends.
My Future: I am attending Bowen School of Law in Little Rock this fall, and plan on pursuing a J.D. Degree with the possibility of Master’s in Public Administration or Public Service. I do not know if I will practice law or pursue public service, but if I enter politics, my values are not for sale to special interest groups. If elected to public office, I will always do what I believe is best for the citizens that I represent. Arkansas is my home and I have a duty to do what I can to improve life in our state.

2012 Recipients

Ayron Young

Ayron Young

Born: Little Rock, Arkansas
Education: Home schooled, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
Current Service: Vice-Chairman UALR College Republicans
Political Philosophy:

  • I believe in the value of hard work, a government that is closest to the people, in the “say what you mean, no biting your tongue in order to be politically correct” kind of free speech, in individual opportunity, in welfare as a temporary aid not a source of income for the rest of your life, and a tax code that does not dampen the motivation for individuals as they work more.
  • I believe that people should preserve the resources God has given us, and provide for the needs of the poor and handicapped – not because the federal government forces us to do so, but because it is the right thing, and the American thing, to do.
  • I believe that we should know our history, know what we stand for, and do everything in our power to make sure the State of Arkansas, and America, is nothing less than great.
  • I believe that whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Hippie Anarchist, or Independent, that we should all agree on one thing – we shouldn’t be arguing over “who has more money, or whether we should or should not put our hand over our heart during the national anthem,” it should be about doing the right thing and accepting nothing but the best. Not only for ourselves, but also for our children and our children’s children.

Family: Daughter of Keta & Kerry Young; three sisters, Sidney, Angela, and Maria; two brothers, Doug and Jonathan.
Interests: Politics, Horses, Painting, Guitar, BMX, and Traveling.
My Future: I want to complete my college education at UALR and pursue curriculum that will help me achieve my many goals in life. I have a lot on interests and many things that I would like to do in my lifetime. One of my goals, and perhaps the most important, is to someday be elected United States Congresswoman.

Political Philosophy:

  • The “torch of liberty” represents the freedom and opportunity that only Americans know, but it requires action on the part of young citizens to preserve it.
  • Our country is great because the Founding Fathers drafted documents with principles and values, which will ensure America’s greatness. Without them, we are nothing. America is also based on Christian principles, and we can never stray from them. If we do, we are sure to face the consequences. God has blessed our nation greatly, and we can never turn from Him.
  • Issues are more important to our citizens than politicians. It is essential to focus on issues instead of focusing on the candidate and it is how the candidate will address the issues of the day that is most important.
  • Limited government should prevail, adherence to the Constitution should prevail, and leaders who sincerely work for the citizen’s best interest should prevail.

Family: Son of Tina & Keith Haney and brother to Brinkley & Holland Haney
Interests: Politics, Faith, Movies, Traveling, Music, and History
My future: I plan to graduate with a degree in Political Science from Ouachita Baptist University and attend Law School at the Bowen School of Law in Little Rock. Melissa Michelle Miller

Melissa Michelle Miller

Born: Hope, Arkansas
Education: Texas High School, Texarkana, Texas and graduated from University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2012 with a BA in political Science and a minor in Middle Eastern Studies.
Current Service:

  • Member of UALR College Republicans and former Vice-Chairman.
  • Republican Party of Arkansas Intern
  • Intern at KLF & Company as coordinator of events for Senator John Boozman and Congressman Rick Crawford
  • Intern for State Representative David Sanders

Political Philosophy:

  • President Ronald Reagan said, “Freedom is a fragile thing and never more than one generation away from extinction. It is not ours by inheritance; it must be fought for a defended constantly by each generation, for it comes only once to a people. Those who have known freedom, and then lost it, have never known it again.”
  • As an American, I believe that we should never forget where we came from and where we are going. Individuals of today will shape the country’s future. It is important that we not only fight for our present freedom but also fight for the freedom of future generations. We should strive to ensure that the United States continues in the future to be the great county that it has always been.
  • I believe that conservatives hold the moral and economic beliefs and values to preserve America as the great country it is today. Limited government that guarantees state’s rights will keep the people in control of the government and not the government in control of the people.

Interest: Government, politics, reading, campaigning, fishing, and a connoisseur of cowboy boots.

  • The role of government is to protect liberty and promote freedom, not provide equal “nanny state” benefits to all citizens. The best government is small and allows, not guarantees, everyone the freedom to succeed.
  • Our government was founded on Judeo-Christian values and designed for a moral and free people. Government should never prohibit expressions of faith or discourage faith-based initiatives as solutions to social problems.
  • The end of all political activity should be to ensure the liberty and freedom for future generations. This includes a fair tax system that doesn’t punish prosperity, the promotion of free markets (i.e. efficient not entangling regulation), and a balanced federal budget.

Political Philosophy:

  • “Let us have faith that right makes might; and in that faith let us, to the end, dare to do our duty as we understand it.” ~Abraham Lincoln
  • I believe that the greatest thing those in public service can do, whether citizens or political leaders, is to strive to do what is right, most importantly in the sight of God. I believe there is a standard of values and beliefs that we should honor and by which we should live.
  • I believe voters are searching for a political party and leaders who share their conservative values and are willing to promote those policies to build a better Arkansas. This calls for sincere and passionate leaders from the Republican Party to be honest and clear about our convictions. We should always remember that “our goal is to solve problems that everyone faces and not just to win political battles against the opposition, but to win practical battles for the people who don’t live off a trust fund, but instead, live off the trust that the people they elect will act with integrity and intensity for the taxpayers who foot the bill for government.”

Interests: Government & Politics, Traveling, Reading History & Biography, and Playing the Piano.

My Future: I am currently a junior at UALR majoring in Political Science with minors in Presidential Studies and Social Studies. I plan on pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Administration after graduation. I would like to return Batesville and teach either College or High School as well as getting involved in local politics. It has always been my dream to enter public service and serve as an elected official. Thus far, the Lord has greatly blessed my life with so many great opportunities and I pray He continues to guide my footsteps in whatever His plan is for my life.

Political Philosophy:

  • That our country was undeniably founded upon biblical principles. These principles have been a solid foundation for decades, and will continue to be the cornerstone of our Union, until we fail to use such principles as a guiding compass for the direction of our country.
  • That the purpose of the judicial branch is simply to interpret the law and determine its constitutionality as opposed to judicial activism and creating law from the bench.
  • That the power and prosperity of free-market capitalism is far greater than a government-planned economy. Reasonable regulation, lower taxes, and less government intrusion will allow the free-market system to prosper and will create jobs and wealth. It is not the governments’ responsibility to pick winners and losers.
  • That every individual is created equally at birth, but it is personal decisions that alter one’s life.

Interest: Storm Chasing, Faith & Ministry, Missions, Political Campaigning

On attending the Youth Leadership School: Receiving the Calhoun Leadership Scholarship was certainly a life altering blessing. Traveling to Washington DC and seeing first hand the history of our great country was enough to leave one speechless. The training that I received at the Leadership Institute YLS was invaluable. I knew what I believed before attending the school and had a vision for not only my political future, but also a vision for changing the landscape of Arkansas politics. The YLS equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and resources to do just that.

My Future: I am currently a second-semester junior at Arkansas Tech University majoring in Emergency Administration and Management with an emphasis on homeland security. Though I plan on pursuing a career in emergency management later in life, I feel that the 2012 election cycle will have unprecedented importance to my generation and to the conservative cause. Therefore, I plan on graduating and quickly going to work for a conservative candidate in the 2012 presidential campaign.

I believe that “all politics is local” and that the biggest impact one can have is at the local level. I eventually plan on moving back home to Ozark, Arkansas and pursue a career in emergency management in my hometown. By building relationships within the community, I feel that I would be well positioned to run for state representative or state senate. Though I currently have no intentions of seeking other offices, I also recognize that Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans that I have for you.” God has plans for my life and His plans may differ from my own. If I am called to run for higher office, I will answer the call to serve Him and the people of our great state.

Education:  Ozark High School in Ozark, Missouri, Political Science major at the University of Arkansas

Business:  Office Assistant University of Arkansas Honors College, Fayetteville, Arkansas

Service:  University of Arkansas College Republicans Vice Chair, Arkansas Federation of College Republicans 3rd District Representative, active in Associated Student Government

Political Philosophy:

  • Small government is the best government. The federal government should be responsible only for the enumerated powers it is granted by the Constitution.  All other powers should be the responsibility of the states, which are better suited to serve the people.
  • As the Declaration of Independence says, “we are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.”  Life is our most basic and precious right and all other rights flow from it.  Life, including that of the unborn, must be always protected.
  • The government should ensure that all citizens are given equal opportunity to succeed and not attempt to give all citizens equal results. Capitalism should be our guide as those who work hard are rewarded and productivity is encouraged. A realistic safety net should exist for those who honestly need it.

Interests:  Politics, reading, movies, history, being with family and friends

On attending the Youth Leadership School: One word can summarize my experience at the Leadership Institute – empowered!  I’m now empowered to go back to my campus and work to spread the conservative message. I’m empowered to stand up for what I believe and to not take no for an answer. From how to work a recruitment table to getting the attention of the local press, The Leadership Institute gave me valuable information on building my student organization.  They also offer additional help to their students who are back home and on campus – such as how to start a conservative-minded newspaper or help running for a student government office.  I met amazing people from all over the country who share my values, and with whom I’ll stay in contact and work together in the future.  I cannot thank the Leadership Institute and the Calhoun Scholars Program enough for this wonderful opportunity.

My Future:  I am currently a sophomore majoring in Political Science at the University of Arkansas.  I will work tirelessly to elect conservative candidates to all levels of government in the upcoming election and in future elections. I plan on graduating with honors and attending graduate school pursuing a Master’s Degree in Public Administration or Public Policy. I want to work in government, possibly on a Congressional staff, and would consider it an honor to service my country as an elected official in the future.

Political Philosophy:

  • I am a conservative first and a Republican second because at times my party has left me, but my values never have.
  • America is the greatest experiment in freedom this world has ever seen, but not because of its government, but because of its people.
  • I believe in the principles of “Original Intent” and that broad interpretation of the Constitution leads to expanding government power at the expense of its citizens and blurs the boundaries set forth by checks and balances.
  • It is the citizen’s duty, not the government’s to maintain personal responsibilities.

On attending the Youth Leadership School: Going to Washington D.C. was one of the best experiences of my life. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the school, but the knowledge that I left with was invaluable and essential for a successful career in politics.  The information, the data, and mock political scenarios are great teaching tools for today’s up and coming conservative leaders.

In addition to the school, being in Washington D.C. was an experience in itself. Walking where our forefathers walked, seeing the history of America in person was a highlight of the trip. I still remember one of my favorite moments, sitting at the Jefferson Memorial late at night with fellow Calhoun Scholars just soaking in the spirit of freedom and liberty.

My Future: I am entering my senior year at the University of Central Arkansas this fall where I will finish my degree in Political Science and I am currently working on a second degree in Business & Finance. I intend on going to Law School after I receive my degree.  Although I am currently maintaining a focus on school and work, I will continue to stay active in politics. In addition to a career in law, I am considering becoming a political consultant. When the time is right, I may consider running for public office.

Political Philosophy:

  • I am a conservative because I believe the Constitution of the United States is the greatest document ever written by man and its preservation is the battle cry of my generation.
  • I am a conservative because less government and lower taxes create more freedom and more prosperity for all.
  • I am a conservative because I believe in American exceptionalism; that freedom is given by God, not by government, and that it is a gift to all men.
  • I am a conservative because I believe in traditional American values and protecting the most vulnerable in our society.
  • I am a conservative because I believe that the government that governs least governs best.
  • I am a conservative because I believe in the power of the individual.
  • I am a conservative because I believe limited government creates the greatest capacity for the greatest good in the hearts of men.

Interests: Politics, Football, Music, History, Family, and College Basketball.

On attending the Youth Leadership School: The benefits of attending the Youth Leadership School are too numerous to list.  Now I must admit, the school is initially quite overwhelming – a total of nearly 20 hours were spent in the classroom listening to lectures, taking notes, and constructing creative campaign models.  However, on the plane back to Arkansas and in the following months, I began to download and process the oodles of information that had just been pumped into my brain.  I started studying my notes and I was blown away at the quality of information we were given.  As I campaign for city council right now, I am daily drawing on these reservoirs of knowledge.

The trip to YLS was my first time in Washington D.C.  It was certainly an amazing experience and quite a time to be in the nation’s capitol. We were there during the nastiest of the Obama health care debate and it truly felt like we were living history.

Being there also inspired me and made me believe that I really can have an impact on my country.  I remember standing in the rotunda of the Jefferson memorial and reading the words of Jefferson that are inscribed on the wall:  “Indeed I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just and that his justice cannot sleep forever.”  Turning and looking out the entrance of the memorial, across the pond and into the Oval Office, my eyes filled with tears and I began to deeply pray for my country.  This is a moment I will never forget.

One last great thing about the entire Calhoun Scholarship experience was of course the friendships.  I made life-long friendships during our four days in D.C., and for that I am eternally grateful.  In the past year since our trip, we have attended TEA Parties, other political events and even held our 1st Annual Calhoun Scholars Reunion together.  I have also had the privilege of getting to know this year’s scholars.

I am truly proud to bear the name “Calhoun Scholar” because of the lasting impact the experience has made on my life and the honorable principles that this name represents.  I would be honored to someday serve on the Selection Committee.  Until then, I am greatly enjoying the new friendships and friendships to come.

My Future: Right now I am a candidate for Searcy City Council.  After the election on November 2nd, I will be rolling up my sleeves and getting to work for the people of my great city.  In May, I will graduate with my Master’s in Business Administration from Harding University.  I hope to start my business career next summer.  Until then, I am focused on growing my lawn care business and finishing my graduate degree strongly.

Richard Caster

Born: Mountain Home, Baxter County, Arkansas

Richard Caster

Education: Home Schooled and diploma from Kolbe Academy, Currently attending Arkansas State University at Mountain Home with a goal of obtaining a Masters in Business.

Business: Manager of Colton’s Steak House, Mountain Home, Arkansas

Current Service: Founder & Organizer of the Ozark Tea Party; Member of the Baxter County Republican Committee, Host of “Blessings of Liberty Show” on KTLO Radio, Chairman of Young Americans for Freedom Arkansas Chapter, and Baxter County Justice of the Peace, District 2.

Past Service: President of the Baxter County Teenaged Republicans.

Political Philosophy:

  • I am a Conservative. I believe in a Government as outlined by our founders in the Constitution and Declaration of Independence. (i.e. small limited government)
  • I am pro-Life. I believe that life begins at the moment of conception and babies inside the womb should be protected with all the rights of any American citizen.
  • I believe in our right to bear arms. Not only to enjoy the sport of hunting, but also for the protection our families.
  • I believe the government should be a good steward of our tax dollars, and frivolous budgets and expenditures should always be opposed.
  • I believe in servant politicians whose main goal is to serve their constituency, not to secure some future political office.
  • I believe in Personal Responsibility. I believe the government can only secure for us equal opportunity and not equal outcome.  The unique thing about America is our freedom to be great. If our freedom to be great is true, then the freedom to fail must come with it.
  • Sadly, people from my generation feel that they have “human rights” to housing, food, healthcare, transportation, and wealth.  But a simple, quick read of our founding documents teaches that rights are endowed by our Creator. Our rights are our freedom and not the physical things that we can touch and feel.
  • I refuse to believe that America’s best days are behind us. I truly believe that if we work hard enough and elect true leaders at all levels of Government, America’s tomorrow will be better then today. President Ronald Reagan was right when he said, “All we need to begin with is a dream that we can do better than before. All we need to have is faith and that dream will come true. All we need to do is act and the time for action is now!”

Family: Son of Ron and Mary Ann Caster, youngest of three siblings.

Interest: Colonial History, Music, Movies, Religion, Friends, Family, Business, and Politics.

On attending the Youth Leadership School: When I attended the Youth Leadership School in 2009, I wasn’t quite sure what I would learn there. But what I came away with has been priceless pieces of information I have not only been able to use in my campaign but also my day-to-day life as an American citizen. Besides the amount of political knowledge I gained at the YLS, it has also given me friendships that I will value for the rest of my life.

My Future: The future for me is uncertain. My personal dream would be to graduate with a Masters in Business, become an Insurance Agent, settle down with a family, retire at 50 and travel our beautiful country in an RV. But as you know, the best way to make God laugh is to tell Him about our plans. Keeping that in mind, I have put my life and my future into God’s hands. I feel that God has called me to serve my country, not in Uniform like my grandfathers but in the political arena.

Whether this journey into politics let’s me stay here in Mountain Home, Arkansas or takes me to Washington DC, my prayer is this; I pray that God uses me to do His work here on earth. I pray that He gives me the strength to climb any mountain or cross any valley the liberals put in front of me. And lastly, I pray He allows me pass onto my children a country more free and prosperous then the one that we have today. So, what is my plan for the future? My plan is to be here ready and willing to do what God has planned for me!
